My very dear friend, who happens to be a vegan animal rights activist, actress, and writer once sent me a short story for review. It was titled "Breakups, Burnt Rats, and Bruises" and it delighted in igniting horror in relationships with an underbelly of extremism. It was intense to say the least, albeit a wonderfully written tale of truth. Now, since I can't tell you the story, I want to focus simply on the title as it leads gorgeously into my topic on relationships. Isn't this how we all feel when it's finally the end; when at long last enough is enough?
My ex-boyfriend left me two weeks ago to join the troops in Iraq. After a long, hard, and complicated year he had finally come full circle, deciding in what seemed like minutes, to join the army. Not two weeks later he was in boot camp, and six after that I was hugging him at the airport before he slipped through security and left.
This man has put me through the ultimate of all agonies and this is only the latest in a circle of inconsistency. But, for some reason I hold on, remembering what he used to be and praying that one day he'll return that man. "Breakups, Burnt Rats, and Bruises" is relative of our situation. We haven't actually been a couple for almost a year, but everyone knows that the zone between the breakup and being friends is a slippery, tricky, and sometimes hateful line. Right now his leaving has conjured up only one feeling…and I'm more confused than ever. Talk about bruises.
